Adam was the first representative for man. God made him and made him a king. God made a covenant with Adam and subsequently all of mankind that was binding. Adam was king and all us unborn were his subjects and bound by the treaty Adam had from God. When Adam broke the treaty he lost for himself and his subjects the benefits of the treaty with God, including fellowship with God, living in the garden, etc. Adam died spiritually when he broke the treaty with God because separation from God is spiritual death.

To bring back temporary fellowship with man God made the covenant with Abraham and his descendents. Then the Law was given to Moses. Blood sacrifices were established for the temporary covering of sins so God could approach man again and have fellowship with him because God cannot approach sin.

If you owed a fine to a court and you took the money to pay the fine and threw it in the gutter your fine would not be paid. You didn't pay the fine to the court in the proper way. You have to go and pay the fine to the clerk of courts. The same with the Law. The Law made a way for man to pay fines in blood to God to cover sin. When Jesus then offered Himself, being God in the flesh, His blood was so much more precious than the blood of animals all the fines of mankind were paid forever. All we have to do is accept this by faith. Faith when used transports us from spiritual death to "the spirit of life in Christ Jesus". You don't really have to understand it completely in an intellectual way. You just have to believe with your heart that Jesus bought our redemption and trust God that He did it right. Jesus is alive and sits at the right hand of God. Hope this helps.
