This might be because McCain, of himself, raises fewer hackles (or revolts fewer opponents) than Bush in 2004. I take your point, but perhaps it seems worse to me because I expected better from McCain. And perhaps because the charges are more conspicuously bogus and tasteless. With the swiftboating, there was really no way to know what really happened. It was not inconceivable that the accusations were legit. Also, it seemed to come more from third parties than this year, where the candidates are actively participating. "I approved this message."
