That is exactly how I make my "magic broth." I thought it was totally my recipe but I must have seen Alton Brown do it and just remembered it. Over the years my recipe has evolved... I freeze in two cup increments too. It comes in handy for so many different dishes.

I made one change to that recipe... I add 10 whole allspice berries and use a few more peppercorns. The allspice berries are not really noticeable, just add a depth of flavor.
