The Rove brand of modern conservatism was supposed to be so compelling that it would create a permanent conservative majority in Congress and the electorate, and the K Street lobbyists would also be in their camp.

But Rove could only win elections by 50.x% base mobilizing, and the rest of the equation collapsed under its own weight.

The folks who still support the movement are so caught up in it that they can't see any other viable alternative. So they will stick with the cause even if/when it gets murdered at the polls. The loss will be a "failure" of the media to ask the right questions and write the right (pun intended) headlines - anyone to blame except the movement itself.

This year could well be another 1980, a major realignment election that puts the White House in Democratic hands for 2-3 terms if they do things right.
