IF collectives are really giant petri dishes acted upon by endogenous and exogenous forces (which I think they are), then you never really know what combinations of attributes are going to be most important for any given scenario- especially since you and your attributes are "in" the mix, so you can't look at the thing from "outside" (in other words, you can't objectively evaluate the system you are part of.). If there is an enormous mix of individuals and ideas, then you have more of a chance of hitting on some combination of solutions that will help your society survive (Imo, of course). You don't know whether your views will aid survival directly, or whether the oppositional force TO your views will aid survival, or whether something coming out of the mix of all ideas in the air will move things forward. But I do believe that all things contribute to the possibility of continued survival. (however, if the "mix" ends in global thermonuclear war I'm prepared to concede that I was wrong)
