Mme Sybarite;

if there is an enormous mix of individuals and ideas, then you have more of a chance of hitting on some combination of solutions that will help your society survive Imo, of course

Hmmmm? The definition of a conservative though is one not inclined to accept change. As over and over I have seen policy by one party or the other that would have been deemed UNACCEPTABLE if it had originated with the 'other' party. As a for instance, if a democrats had been President and had democrats been in charge the last several years - the republicans would never accept the socialistic ideas being suggested today. It would be nice, as you suggest, if good ideas could be used no matter who they came from - but seems to me everything is just knee jerk. The other side is always wrong......because they are the other side.
