I don't know much about that story but hiring somebody for two years at a $50K salary is not the same thing as a $100K PAYOUT TO AN ALLEGED MISTRESS.

What usually happens in these cases is, two people have an affair, afterward one of them wants the other one out of the office, and person B is "moved" to another location in the company or something. thats pretty common
