maybe, s&p is not a great comparison after being artificially held high, after all it is a matter of choice we differ on gold and I think your claim is not proven even more so if compared to coal or crude oil over the last decade in any case one decade on this subject is a bit short - best would be over a span of a generation maintaining the buying power of an asset over a generation should qualify as "real money" residential RE in many locations qualifies but in many others does not
