Quantum leap for Durban, South Africa: The laws of physics are used to transfer secure data
by Kendrick Struthers-Watson | Telecommunications Magazine | October 14, 2008

Through a R10 million (South African Rand) research grant from the country’s Innovation Fund, the Centre for Quantum Research was established in 2005 at KwaZulu-Natal University under the leadership of Professor Francesco Petruccione. The centre is the forerunner in Quantum Information processing and Communication (QIPC) in Southern Africa.

In line with the ‘Durban – Smart City’ initiative, collaboration between the eThekwini Municipality and the Centre for Quantum Technology has brought about the realization of a secure quantum network over the eThekwini municipal optical fiber infrastructure. Plans to extend this unique ICT solution to the public will pave the way Durban to become the first Quantum City in the world.

Presently a test-bed network is being analysed with quantum links between Cato Manor, Pinetown and Westville.
