I remember on family feud once a black family with really bizarre spellings of their first name. All of them were good looking and articulate and intelligent and finally Richard couldn't take it any more and asked Arik (Eric) about the spellings on all of their names and he said his mother was illiterate and spelled them the way she thought they sounded. I would have thought perhaps a nurse or someone might have suggested an alternate spelling but that is what they had.
