I am unclear why its bad to ask for ID when voting. Not all people are eligible to vote. Why shouldn't that be checked?

because asking for a picture id is more restrictive than straight eligibility. poor/old people who don't drive usually have to pay to get a state picture id which is usually only issued at dmv offices which are not easily accessible especially if you're poor/old and not driving.

so asking for a picture id is a way of reducing certain type of potential voter access. for us able bodied, driving folk this is difficult to appreciate sometimes.
