A hoseowning society [Mark Steyn]

I'm wearing mine to the inaugural. From The Times Of India:

Men have invaded ladies' fashion domain a little further, for after 'man-bras' and 'manscara' the latest must have for men is "mantyhose."

"Mantyhose"or pantyhose for men have become a popular sheer garment from truck drivers to cowboys...

"Men have great legs and hosiery is a great way to show them. It's quite practical in some ways. It prevents chafing, for example, when horse riding or cycling, but it's also a good alternative to bulky underwear if you need some warmth,"News.com.au quoted Harisnya, as saying...

"Not all men like to hide in grey uniformed clothes. It's an easy way to dress differently, pairing the colour or pattern of your pantyhose to the rest of your clothes just like you do with the colour or pattern of your tie."

Indeed. If you're a stylish fireman, you might want to coordinate your hose and your ladder. But don't ladder your hose.

Didn't Happen [Jonah Goldberg]

I wonder how many corrections will come from this? (For the record, I used the story in my column, but I thought it was a nothingburger when I thought it was true. Still I regret the error):

Secret Service says "Kill him" allegation unfounded
By Andrew M. Seder
Staff Writer

SCRANTON – The agent in charge of the Secret Service field office in Scranton said allegations that someone yelled "kill him" when presidential hopeful Barack Obama's name was mentioned during Tuesday's Sarah Palin rally are unfounded.

The Scranton Times-Tribune first reported the alleged incident on its Web site Tuesday and then again in its print edition Wednesday. The first story, written by reporter David Singleton, appeared with allegations that while congressional candidate Chris Hackett was addressing the crowd and mentioned Oabama's name a man in the audience shouted "kill him."

News organizations including ABC, The Associated Press, The Washington Monthly and MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann reported the claim, with most attributing the allegations to the Times-Tribune story.

Agent Bill Slavoski said he was in the audience, along with an undisclosed number of additional secret service agents and other law enforcement officers and not one heard the comment.

"I was baffled," he said after reading the report in Wednesday's Times-Tribune.

He said the agency conducted an investigation Wednesday, after seeing the story, and could not find one person to corroborate the allegation other than Singleton.

Andrea Mitchell [Jonah Goldberg]

It's a small thing, but media bias is usually in the small things. This morning on the Today Show, Mitchell did the main news piece on the debate. She covered the point where McCain and Obama argued about who was more negative. Obama insists that McCain's ads have been "100% negative" and defends the statement again when McCain says it's not true. Cut to objective reporter Andrew Mitchell who says something like "independent fact checking organizations say both campaigns have been negative."

To be sure. But that wasn't the assertion of fact that cried out for truth-squadding. Going by Mitchell's report, Obama's claim could still be true, even though I am sure that no independent fact-checking organizations would back up any such claim.

Update: From a reader:

Jonah,

NBC did its own "truth squading" in its post debate show with Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw. Their reporter said something like 71% of McCain's ads were negative compared to 63% for Obama. Then even showed McCain's congratulatory ad after Obama accepted the Democratic nomination.

It looks like Mitchell doesn't watch her own network's reporting or deliberately ignores it.
