Watching the CNN panel after the show, the verdict was mixed until the flash poll numbers came out giving Obama a 2-1 win; then they all chimed in with the negative impact of McCain's facial gestures while Obama was speaking, which came across badly. Since McCain needed a win and didn't get one, Anderson Cooper asked David Gergen what McCain needed to do on the campaign trail on Thursday. This senior adviser who worked with several presidents, could only say: "Beats the hell out of me." His expression was total exasperation with McCain's situation. That's Gergen's way of saying McCain is done, just like Rollins did a week before. He mentioned McCain should go positive and try to close the polls to limit the loss of seats in Congress. But there's really nothing else for McCain to latch onto to get himself back into contention. Last night was McCain's last chance to speak directly with no filters to a majority of the electorate. He chose to try the attack line and got nowhere.
