Yes, I am.

Most of their ICBMs didn't have the range to hit the US. Those that did were just being installed in 1962, and even then, much of the US was out of reach. As far as the subs, that was the Echo and Hotel class subs. There never were very many of each, like maybe half a dozen, and the Hotel class subs spent more time sinking than floating. Both were noisy and easy to track.

Could they hit the US? Of course. Could they destroy the US?

No. Not even close.
