That's a good point and it's where I originally started with this accounting exercise.

Because that 7-13 cents EPS in Q4 was only a fraction of what NOK actually owed for 6 quarters, I originally figured that QCOM just intended to amortize the entire lump sump payment over 63 quarters - 6 past and 57 future quarters.

That was the only way I could make sense out of 7-13 cents.

QCOM was clearly expecting to have the payment in hand prior to 9/30/08, else they would not be able to book an actual EPS impact in Q4. Now it's pushed back a quarter.

Lauer did say QCOM would give some guidance on how they would do this amortization in the Q4 earnings release and CC, so I guess we'll have to wait and see how they are going to account for this big pile of $$.

However they do it, it does go on the balance sheet as soon as it's received. Maybe it will compensate for any losses on investments!
