bingo. If they really wanted to help Joe the plumber, talking about progressive FEDERAL income taxes is a waste of time. Here is what a 250K small business owner cares about,

- PAYROLL taxes, about 12K per year per employee going to a non working social security and medicare system that anyone under 40 will never see. If Joe has 2 employees thats 25K right there.
- Healthcare costs. Getting to $1K per month per employee for family coverage.
- Fuel expenses. Too high for the labor market that needs to commute.

The federal income tax is neither here nor there in this, as you say everything is written off.

If republicans and McCain really wanted to cut the tax burden from people like Joe the Plumber they would trash medicare and SS as it exists now, roll whatever cost for old age insurance up in the general fund and toss this regressive employee based FICA tax, and implement single payer healthcare.
