I don't think it's true that the other Republican candidates would have been made "mincemeat by Obama".

Obama is where he is largely due to not only lack of media scrutiny, but assists by the media at every step. In fact, the media has abandoned all pretense of objectivity.

I think other contenders may have been more willing than McCain to take on Obama more aggressively in the earlier stages.

Team McCain went wrong by not addressing Obama's past associations and the Democrat's and ACORN's very real role in the financial meltdown starting at least 3 months ago. Those drums should have been beaten hard and often before McCain ever had to try and articulate the concepts in a debate.

McCain somehow can't strike the killing blow on such issues and lets Obama get away with bold faced lies.
