If your focused on the person rather than what they say then it would be rather difficult to make any argument that you would consider remotely worthwhile.

Everyone in public life, and David Brooks is a very clear illustration, leaves a trail of public ruminations. It's very clear where his convictions and commitments lie. Fine. But if he defends Reagan against something as obvious as the reasons his campaign used Philadelphia, Miss, then I don't take him seriously on that point.

If it's very clear that Reagan had no nefarious reasons for opening his campaign there, then the media should be full of defenses of him, from all sides. Particularly, since the assumption has long been that he meant it as a direct signal to the south.

Of course, Mississippi was Dem at the time, though it was well on its way to flipping. As you may recall, that was precisely the Rep strategy. It was just not quite complete then.

As for the data about when the Reps came to dominate the south, the better way to do that would be to look at the trends. Both at the level of national elections and at the level of senate and house races.
