There is LOTS of political debate on the topic! It's talked about in every election.

It gets talked about in presidential contests, but usually not very much, and either not in specific terms, or if specific just the very fringe cases such as partial birth abortion.

Without Roe vs. Wade you would have had a much greater amount of discussion about when, how, why abortion would be allowed or not allowed in state capitals all across the US. The political process would hammer out compromises. Roe vs. Wade short circuited all of that.
