According to this list, two of the world's largest "gas elephants" are on land in the USA: number 3 (Marcellus shale) and number 4 (Haynesville Shale). These recently-discovered shale gas plays are conveniently located near existing pipeline/storage infrastructure and close to major urban markets. Meanwhile, 37% of our offshore Gulf of Mexico natural gas production is still offline from Hurricane Ike.
