As of last week there were 1,990 rigs actively drilling for oil and gas in the USA. If you think none of this activity consists of "new drilling projects", then we have a semantic difference of opinion. I rest my case...

North American Rotary Rig Counts

The U.S. rotary rig count was up 11 at 1,990 for the week of October 10, 2008 and is 12.6 percent higher than last year.

The number of rotary rigs drilling for oil is up 7 at 429. The number of rigs targeting oil is 110 greater than last year's level of activity. Rigs currently drilling for oil represent 21.6% percent of total drilling activity.

Rigs directed toward natural gas were up 4 at 1,548. The number of rigs currently drilling for gas is 106 greater than last year's level of 1,442.

Year-over-year oil exploration in the US is up 34.5 percent. Gas exploration is up 7.4 percent.
