I see McCain as the "I coulda been a contender" guy who made some bad choices and gave up who he really was at other people's urging so he could get the nomination.

In practice, only a moderate, centrist Republican could have competed with Obama during an economic meltdown. Once McCain decided to dance with everyone on the right in the primaries, he was committed to positions that are wrecking his chances now.

The question for the future is, which way will the party go for 2012, presuming they are running against an incumbent President Obama with an improved economy then? If Obama can maintain his approval ratings, then running against him as a "far left liberal out of touch with the American people" will look pretty insular and asinine.

Which is how the red base sounds at the moment, from the little skimming I have done. They are lost in an ideological cloud cuckooland while the real election burns down around them.

Even I would not have predicted that Obama would be up double digits in PA now. That's a major deal.
