The sign to watch for if McCain loses badly, is who starts giving speeches about where the party needs to go next. The 2012 contenders will probably start early, jockeying for party influence and leadership.

Especially if McConnell loses his Senate seat. Boehner doesn't have the stature to keep the herd in line, not even close.
