As you wrote----

"When unions were strengthened during New Deal in the 30's, they protected the working man and allowed for the rise of a large middle class. And the country prospered. And so the 50's and 60's, when we had a large middle class people did the best ever."

Look at what you wrote------------what happened to World War II and its impact on America, Europe and the world which was in between the 30's and the 50's and 60's?

I submit that WWII had a greater impact than the New Deal in the 1930's on the country prospering in the 50's and 60's.

When Unions were strenghened during the 1930's gradually they became the owner of the country store for the coal miners of Va. W.Va. Kentucky, Penns. and likely the other coal states such as Illinois.

The old song "I owe my soul to the company store was not just about the company that owned the country store it was about the unions also----owing their soul to the unions."

This was socialism and this is what Obama wants to return the whole nation to with the Government being the Country Store and the Union---mj
