that they have just suspended judgment about qualifications and issues

For some reason, qualified seems to have become synonymous with elitist and out of touch and even corrupt.

Someone wrote last night that Joe the Plumber "might have alot(sic) OF catching up to do though as far as depth of knowledge. After all, tradesmen don't have a whole mess OF time to read."

What?
My husband has worked 14 hour days for years. He still managed to read plenty!- he watches little tv, and spends hours on the weekend with a book. Our favorite date is to go for margaritas, nachos, and then to HalfPrice. Now I am not saying that reading makes you qualified to be president, but I do think that depth of knowledge isn't something you just decide to "catch up on" because you want to be president.

A curiosity and desire to grow and learn isn't at all reliant on whether you go to college or are formally educated. Autodidacts are found throughout history. Some of our founding fathers certainly were self-taught, Lincoln, Truman, both huge readers. People who learned because they just craved it.

It's one of the biggest reasons I disliked Palin. There was nothing in her past that showed this desire. I really worry about this backlash to education and experience.
