Reagan set the tone for someone who didn't look like a wonk and communicated clearly. From all I have heard, he was actually fairly smart and knew the issues and details. But we progressed to GWB and the "don't argue with yourself" approach to policymaking despite the MBA; the natural extension is someone with really zero qualifications or interest in the details, just the right broad brush cartoon image.

If Palin had proved to be a long-term plus for the McCain ticket I would have been concerned. But she is clearly now a millstone pulling him down under that 45% ceiling.
