It is a serious question, and I thank you for a more substantive answer than most responses to it.

I do not agree with your assessment that Bush alienated a sympathetic world. The rest of the world alienated me and many Americans with its cowardly fears that if it supported us the terrorists might do the same thing to them.

I have no problem with Bush saying "You are either for us or against us." In the face of such a devastating attack, no other relationship is valid.

And the same goes for the domestic alienation you suggest Bush used to divide the country. I've tracked this through observing correspondence on SI and in the media. Gore's supporters were angry that he lost the hanging chad competition and were determined to see Bush fail. They had to shut up for a while because Bush was hit in the face with several major catastrophes that could have been prevented if Clinton hadn't been so glib, and so lucky to have been in office during the dot com bubble.

Once they got over that, they started sniping at Bush. Bush couldn't kiss a baby without some snarky or vicious remark, many of them posted on this thread.

Bush asked for and deserved cooperation that would unite the country. He didn't get it. His enemies were and are determined to see him fail.

I hope Obama does not receive a similar treatment from the right. America deserves to come together.
