GE had something to do with the Corning panels used on the nosecone at that time. Their cookware was made of the same material.

I Remember the most exciting day was the very first space orbit. All those who had worked so hard on the project for yrs listened intently to the GE intercom, throughout all 8 floors -- as it transmitted the Cape control room's moment by moment communication with the astronaut. Huge roar of applause when the nosecone safely splashed down. Called my parents immediately after the splashdown and said "See--told you it would happen some day." They laughed and said "you were right--we never thought it could happen." Great memories.
