Clark,

RE: "I do not see how free trade has anything to do with the corrupting of democracy?" and

"As for the disparity in wage growth between the two groups - I agree that this is almost certainly due to free trade."

The "disparity...between...two groups", one small and growing wealthier and one large and growing larger and poorer is the underlying force behind the "corrupting of (US) democracy." The interests of these two groups are very different. Democracy requires that decisions are of the people and for the people, that each individual is equally represented. The small wealthy group must thwart the democratic system to promote its minority agenda. It accomplishes this first and foremost by making the election system a fund raising contest and making politicians overly dependent on wealth for their success. The next step is to move mainstream politics in their direction. Some countries have a political spectrum of a left wing, a center, and a right wing. The US has a center and a right wing.
The Free Trade issue is an excellent example of a bipartisan agreement to move the country in a direction which harms many people, to fail to admit the harmful effects to the general public, and, most importantly, to fail to implement efforts which are needed to cope with the resulting distress. I am not opposed to free trade, but I am disturbed by its contribution toward a have/have not society, and I believe that a democracy cannot exist when the interests of the majority are subjugated to the interests of a powerful minority.
