Yes, sorry. But, the reality is that someone with a taxable income may have a gross of much more, due to the tax planning and available deductions, which sort of changes your original math.

For people w/taxable income of $500K, much more of their income is available for investment that can be shielded from higher rates. Someone making $42K has little available for such shielding.
