IIRC, there is speculation that a long drought (50-100 years??) caused either the old or middle kingdom to finally collapse, but AFAIK, the climate before and after that period were about the same. In recorded history Egypt has always been dry, the extensive Ag was based on Nile flooding (something modern man took care of with a dam). During the drought, Nile flooding failed, which would mean poor rainfall further south in Africa.
