Others speculate about a Nortel takeover. From thestreet.com

Top Stories: Nortel's Apparent Data Weakness May Be Overblown

.......One question facing Nortel, primarily a supplier of phone gear, is how it plans to break into the critical area of data networking. Investors found it particularly disconcerting that Nortel's sales in its "enterprise networks" unit -- which includes the data stuff -- softened further this summer. Revenue from Nortel's enterprise networks unit slipped from $962 million in the second quarter to $949 million in the third period. Revenue for the nine months ended Sept. 30 fell 1% from one year earlier. And Nortel CEO John Roth conceded in a call with reporters on Tuesday that he wanted the data business to perform better.

........Despite the fog facing investors over where the weaknesses are, the diagnosis is anything but grim. In fact, the soft spots in its own product lines may spur Nortel into acquiring a networking concern, a scenario that TheStreet.com had sketched earlier on Tuesday. A Nortel official declined to comment.

.......Others were glad to speculate. "Their next move is to buy somebody or form a strong alliance," says Pierre Bernard, manager of the New Economy Fund at Montreal-based T. A. L. Investment Counsel. Bernard lists Ascend(ASND:Nasdaq), Cabletron (CS:NYSE) and Fore Systems (FORE:Nasdaq) as takeover candidates. His fund recently sold Nortel for valuation reasons, but Bernard believes Nortel will prove a fearsome contender in data networking against fellow Canadian Newbridge(NN:NYSE) and networkers south of the Great Lakes.
