Ok, skip all the handwaving about how complex things are, and just try to support your original claim that the bottom half of households pays only 5% of FICA tax.

I agree 100% with you that many of the stats are muddled when talking about tax issues in the USA because earning money individually, while paying taxes based on grouping (spouse, dependents) is a problem. But no matter how you dice those issues, your original claim is off by a large margin.
