Talking to a retired General. US uses depleted uranium in armor piercing ammo, particularly in Airforce A-10 tank destroyers.

Tests show depleted uranium is safe, however, when pulverized after hitting armor plate apparently chemistry changes or something. apparently there are sites in desert where major use of depleted uranium has caused "dead zones". There is absolutely nothing alive in the dead zones, not an insect, not a single plant species. Clean-up of these sites is on-going but word is that a change to tungsten ammo is being recommended. Tungsten is slightly better than depleted uranium in armor piercing ability but US had lots of depleted uranium in stock so chose uranium. Major supplier of tungsten to the world is China. There are security implications to where you have to source your ammo.

Tungsten (ferro) has dropped 50 cents from its yearly high to $17.50. tungsten powder (apt) has dropped 14 cents to $14.27 in the past year.
