Once the cattle were gone so was the income.

He raised hay on a large piece, wheat on some and grazed the bulk.

At 12 he homesteaded the original piece. He added land he purchased as he grew up. His uncle that lived 43 miles away helped him with the homesteading. His requirement was to fence it within five years and raise a crop. After that it was his.

When the house burned down they tried to stay by moving into the soddie he originally built and pour a concrete house. Grandmother went into a depression and there was NO food and NO income. The drought and dust storms sealed that deal. They moved to town. The deed was taken by the bank for non-payment of seed loans.

Grandfather moved to the county seat and worked three jobs for the balance of the depression. After WW2 (1946) my father and grandfather bought the land we still have which is 960 acres.

side story: My grandfather met my grandmother when he caught her father (great-grandfather) rustling cattle off his ranch. He went into their house with his 30-30 saddle rifle and with it against great grandads head told him "If you ever set foot on my land again I will kill you!". My grandmother told her mother that night "I am going to marry that man named Dutch.". I know of two men that were buried behind my great grandfathers barn. Shot during card games I assume.
