I think you would find it interesting to check the public records to find out the real story of your Grandfather's ranch.

Methuselah lived 900 hundred years but it ain't necessarily so.

Some of my Great-Grandmother's stories "can be told from a different perspective", and finding out more revealed a lot about her. She didn't lie, strictly speaking, but there were often other motivations. Sometimes, in her case, the real story was actually less believable until we understood the situation at the time. She enjoyed lying to government officials.
