just in in-tray

FWIW - A very well placed Democratic financier / insider told me today to expect a US$500 Billion stimulus package after Obama is sworn in and a budget deficit of approximately US$1 Trillion for 2009.

He's also predicting negative GDP growth of -2 to -4% for the next few quarters and the worst recession for the last 30 or 40 years.

Unemployment will likely hit 10% or so.

FWIW - I have had conversations with 3 extremely highly placed Democrats in Washington DC.

All three have given me the same name for the Secretary of Treasury under Obama.

Tim Geithner

He is being pushed hard by Bob Rubin and the choice will likely be announced within days of an Obama victory.
The only other serious candidate is Larry Summers - but he is considered "too close" to Clinton given his previous time there.

The longshot/darkhorse to serve a limited 6-month term is Paul Volcker.

But the extremely heavy favorite as of today is Tim Geithner.
