I heard some interesting speculation last night that Palin is fishing around for a Reagan-style general theme about freedom and smaller government. She is certainly trying to run against Obama on that theme.

But her main weakness, along with McCain, is that Obama has taken the lead on the kitchen table issues that come to the fore in an economic crisis. Without Iraq and the whole experience thing, McCain doesn't have much of a track record to compete with on domestic issues. More tax cuts for the rich don't sell at the middle class kitchen table.
