Bizarre. So even though the Democrats don't want her, and have selected someone else as their candidate, she is still entitled to stand as a "Democrat" against the actual Democrat candidate?

AFAIK that isn't allowed here. If you break from your local party, so you are not the approved candidate for a seat, you are not allowed to claim that you are standing for that party in an election. You have to stand under an alternate label - so you'll sometimes see such deselected candidates standing as "Official Labour", or "British Conservative", or similar.
