No, joined at the hip means that one does not happen without the other.

If there are no taxes and no collective activities funded by said taxes (in whatever form), what is the point of living in society at all? If the collective we is no better than the individual we, why not just live in the woods alone?

Obviously, we derive benefits from living in a group that is worth the cost and the aggravation. If we did not, there would be lots of people living the hermit life in the wilderness.

One thing that should be crystal clear at this point is that the 'market' does not work properly unless it is regulated by the government. The market goes crazy and does itself in requiring the government to prop it back up so people do not go screaming into the streets.

No, you are free to live in the woods by yourself without government. If you get more than 3 people in your group though, I hear that politics are inevitable.

What constitutes big government? A % of GDP? The total number of people employed? The number of laws and regulations?

What is the marker that says from this point on you have overly big government? I wish China had better laws and regulations governing its industry...I'll bet China wishes it had them as well.
