There IS a huge emotional attachment. The inflation period preceded a lot of events that split up of families, that met for the first time in 1989 when the wall came down. All Germans know somebody who was affected.

Did you know that almost all houses in Germany have cellars? It was a requirement for many, many years. Guess why.

Did you know that German refugees from the east had to share apartments with other families for many years after the war, because of destruction and deportation.

Did you know that Germans are still faced with discrimination in other countries because of WW2?

The Germans still have American soldiers on their soil, which is frequently mentioned in the media.

The Germans don't want this to repeat, and if they see any sign that we're heading the same direction, they get scared. Me, too. I would show up for a demonstration, too, being the first time in my life.
