Your argument is general hand waving unless you have actual supportive numbers. I can also point out that CEO recruitment and compensation is generally overseen by the board of directors, who are almost always senior executives of other companies, so the whole process is a club. It makes just as much sense that this group has slowly (or rapidly) bid up their respective salaries as to say But the high pay for the execs makes at least very general sense in market terms.

Her choice of Steve Jobs was particularly poor, because she was arguing that one of the reasons companies must bid up the pay is to keep these guys from starting their own companies. Duh, that is exactly what Jobs did after leaving Apple. He started Next, and Next was going to take over the world from Apple in the long run! So, how did that go? Oops, it went broke. So much for the theory that companies need to pay large sums of money to prevent these guys from starting competing companies. She used Pixar to try and imply that Steve had done exactly what she was talking about, gone off and started a successful company. Pixar of course was not even remotely in the same market segment as Apple. As it turns out, Steve's work a Pixar turned out to be more of an inspiration for remaking Apple as a content provider, so if anything, the conclusion to draw is that sending your executives off to learn other ideas might be a wise move. If Apple were still just a PC company, it would not be much of anything today.
