Skype is the way to go. You can have a similar GSM phone and sign up for ATT's international calling - which gives discountd rates. You can cancel at any time - but I think you have to give 30 days' notice.

Studying in Europe. She can buy a phone over there with international callng. Cheap. My daughter, when she was in Florence for a semester, bought one. Cheapest and best way to go.
