There were 8000 new believers immediately, with more coming in all the time. Such a large group, a huge number of whom were extending their stay beyond their means, required more than "a few groceries." And, it is the poor who are the Gospel's main demographic. So, the local believers were also having their needs met along with feeding the visitors. Not to mention clothing and lodging. It was a huge expense for which everyone, including the wealthier among them, were happily selling their goods and property.

It is a testament to the powerful work of God within the hearts of each of these believers to ensure no one had any unmet need. They were "laying down their lives" for each other, just as God commanded; not as any human government could have hoped to mandate.
