True that Norway has a much lower population, but their country also has problems that are daunting because of their topography. There is a fundamental difference between the governments of Norway and the US. In Norway they believe the government is there for the people - they expect government to accomplish projects that benefit their citizens. Here is an interesting list of Human Development Index comparing countries;

Note that except for 3 years that Norway or Canada have led the list. (Japan two years and Iceland 1). Also note that Norway, Sweden and Finland all lead the US and that the US was one of the worse performers last year. Trends! We can - we MUST do better. Just saying we can't because we are too big lets our leaders off the hook.
