Until recently (about 18 years ago), everyone on Catalina Island, off the coast of Southern California, had the bakelite phones. All calls went through a switchboard. Amazingly, there was resistance to taking out the switchboard and giving people their own phones. There was one number to call for the island and you asked for people by name, not extension.
