And others are merely interested in SPEC numbers, right? ;)

a) TPS benchmarks are not worth zilch for things like data mining, and that's one area where having >2GB memory caches helps *a lot*.

b) People also tend to prefer having a certain level of performance, even as measured by things like TPC, without having to use a cluster of N machines, for obvious reasons. They also like the machine to be expandable. At least customers who want configs close to those used for TPS benchmarks.

IMHO, no-one would ever want to buy any TPC-C or -D setup from many companies; they're so full of hacks they're useless for anything but running the benchmarks ;).
