Technology Brief -- BORLAND INTERNATIONAL INC.: Analysts Surprised at Profit Posted for Latest Quarter
Borland International Inc. surprised analysts yesterday by posting a slight profit, with the Scotts Valley, Calif., software maker saying the results showed it was succeeding in turning itself around. For its second quarter ended Sept. 30, Borland said net income was $1.5 million, or three cents a share, compared with a loss of $14.3 million, or 40 cents a share, a year ago. Analysts expected the company to break even. Sales were $42.5 million, up 8% from last year's $39.3 million. Once the provider of general-purpose application programs, Borland was forced by declining sales to focus on selling software-programming products aimed at industry professionals. In after-hours trading following the announcement, Borland shares rose 63 cents to $11. |
