VeraSun Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Posted: Nov 1, 2008 07:56 PM MDT

The nation's second largest ethanol producer has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. South dakota-based VeraSun Energy and 24 of its subsidiaries filed for protection after skyrocketing corn costs and tighter trade credit. VeraSun says it's working with lenders to secure additional financing to fund normal operations before a court hearing on Monday. The company operates 16 facilities, including locations in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa, and has almost $2,000,000,000 in debt.
