Gottfried,
<<why not go with the system that produces the most for the most, and then work on the inequities?>>
Indeed, the system even motivates "greedy" capitalists like Soros, Turner, Ford, Rockefeller, Carnegie and thousands of others to channel their "filthy lucre" into socially benevolent purposes, such as our public library system (thanks, Andrew!) and land mine abolition campaigns. Why not? Can't take it with them! Our tax code, terrible patchwork that it is, excels at motivating such charitable giving, by giving tax breaks to those who start foundations for religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes, etc. Hopefully, as someone predicted, such private foundations will become the BMWs of the late nineties.
